From 120 monthly visits to 2,000, and #1 in the category.
How we turned Hunter Coast Painting's strong offline reputation into category-leading organic visibility: +1,483% traffic, +320% leads, four years in.
Where Hunter Coast Painting was when we walked in.
Hunter Coast Painting came to Firewire with the textbook tradesperson problem: a decade of strong workmanship reputation, locally known, locally trusted, and a website pulling 120 monthly visits. The offline reputation wasn't translating online. In a competitive Newcastle painting market full of established competitors, that visibility gap was costing them quote requests every week.
The brief was straightforward: build a category-authority SEO presence from the ground up. Technical foundation, local-intent content for the Hunter and Lake Macquarie service areas, and the steady compounding work that turns search visibility into qualified leads. Four years in, the partnership has scaled their organic engine from a near-zero baseline into #1 category rankings across the region.
- 120 monthly visits despite a decade-plus local reputation
- Established painting competitors dominating every relevant SERP
- Minimal site content: no comprehensive coverage of services or service areas
- Weak technical SEO foundation (architecture, schema, page speed)
- No local SEO optimisation despite being a hyper-local services business
- Lead capture present but not supported by content that pre-qualified visitors
Three moves that built category authority from zero.
- 01
Built the technical SEO foundation
Architecture, speed, schema.
Before any content shipped, we rebuilt the site's technical foundation: site speed, mobile responsiveness, schema markup, header hierarchy, internal linking architecture. None of it was glamorous, all of it was prerequisite. The site needed to be capable of carrying authority before we started building authority.
- 02
Built topical content clusters around painting services
Residential, commercial, and the spaces in between.
We mapped the search-intent landscape for painting services in the Hunter region, then built deep content clusters around each major category: residential interior, residential exterior, commercial, specialist (industrial, heritage, hospitality). Each cluster had pillar + supporting articles, all interlinked, all answering the questions a buyer asks before requesting a quote.
- 03
Dominated local SEO across the service area
Hunter + Lake Macquarie, suburb by suburb.
Local SEO was the multiplier. Google Business Profile rebuilt + optimised, local citations across the right Australian directories, location-specific service content for the priority suburbs across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. The combination of category authority + local relevance produced the rankings that actually convert to phone calls.
- Technical SEO audit + foundation rebuild Phase 1
- Site architecture restructure Phase 1
- Search-intent keyword research Phase 1
- Service-area page programme (Hunter + Lake Mac) Phase 2
- Topical content clusters per service category Phase 2–ongoing
- Local SEO + Google Business Profile optimisation Phase 2
- Monthly performance + ranking reporting Ongoing
The full picture, by the numbers.
Quarterly average organic sessions. Pre-engagement traffic was essentially zero. This is a true "built from scratch" growth story. The chart shows compounding growth from early 2021 onwards through to Nov 2024.
How the category was actually built.
Four years of compounding SEO across three areas: technical foundation, content clusters, and local SEO dominance.
Technical foundation Built the site to carry authority
At engagement start the site was small, slow, and architecturally weak. We spent the first months rebuilding the technical foundation so every subsequent content win could compound properly.
- Site speed + Core Web Vitals optimised for mobile-first ranking
- Schema markup (HomeAndConstructionBusiness, Service, FAQPage) implemented across service pages
- Internal linking restructured into hub-and-spoke clusters per service category
- Information architecture rebuilt to mirror how buyers search, not how the business is organised
By the time the content programme launched, the foundation was solid. Every new page that shipped landed in a structurally sound site that could carry authority forward. That's what produces compounding growth instead of plateau-then-decay.
Content clusters Built topical authority across four service categories
Painting isn't a single category. It's a federation of related ones. We built deep content clusters around each, with pillar pages and supporting articles, so the site became the authoritative local resource on every major painting topic.
- Cluster: Residential interior (paint selection, preparation, finishes, room-by-room guidance)
- Cluster: Residential exterior (weather considerations, paint types, longevity, prep work)
- Cluster: Commercial (project management, scope, minimising business disruption)
- Cluster: Specialist (heritage, hospitality, industrial: high-value, low-competition niches)
Each cluster carried pillar + supporting articles tightly internally linked. The 430% growth in top-3 ranking keywords came from this. The site started ranking for the right queries across the entire painting landscape, not just one or two.
Local SEO Suburb-level visibility across Hunter and Lake Macquarie
Painting is a hyper-local services business: buyers care about who's near them, not who has the best website nationally. We made sure Hunter Coast Painting won the local SERP for every priority suburb across their service area.
- Google Business Profile fully optimised: categories, photos, services, review velocity
- Local citation programme across the right Australian directories (quality presence, not spam quantity)
- Location-specific service pages for priority suburbs: substantive content, not thin doorways
- Geo-targeted internal linking from service pages to location pages
Local SEO was the multiplier: it took the category authority we'd built and pointed it at the right buyers. By Nov 2024 the firm was ranking #1 for the core 'painters [suburb]' queries across most of the Hunter region. That's the engine producing the 320% growth in qualified leads.
