Where Hunter Coast Painting was when we walked in.

Hunter Coast Painting came to Firewire with the textbook tradesperson problem: a decade of strong workmanship reputation, locally known, locally trusted, and a website pulling 120 monthly visits. The offline reputation wasn't translating online. In a competitive Newcastle painting market full of established competitors, that visibility gap was costing them quote requests every week.

The brief was straightforward: build a category-authority SEO presence from the ground up. Technical foundation, local-intent content for the Hunter and Lake Macquarie service areas, and the steady compounding work that turns search visibility into qualified leads. Four years in, the partnership has scaled their organic engine from a near-zero baseline into #1 category rankings across the region.

    Built the technical SEO foundation

    Architecture, speed, schema.

    Before any content shipped, we rebuilt the site's technical foundation: site speed, mobile responsiveness, schema markup, header hierarchy, internal linking architecture. None of it was glamorous, all of it was prerequisite. The site needed to be capable of carrying authority before we started building authority.

    Built topical content clusters around painting services

    Residential, commercial, and the spaces in between.

    We mapped the search-intent landscape for painting services in the Hunter region, then built deep content clusters around each major category: residential interior, residential exterior, commercial, specialist (industrial, heritage, hospitality). Each cluster had pillar + supporting articles, all interlinked, all answering the questions a buyer asks before requesting a quote.

    Dominated local SEO across the service area

    Hunter + Lake Macquarie, suburb by suburb.

    Local SEO was the multiplier. Google Business Profile rebuilt + optimised, local citations across the right Australian directories, location-specific service content for the priority suburbs across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. The combination of category authority + local relevance produced the rankings that actually convert to phone calls.

At engagement start the site was small, slow, and architecturally weak. We spent the first months rebuilding the technical foundation so every subsequent content win could compound properly.

Painting isn't a single category. It's a federation of related ones. We built deep content clusters around each, with pillar pages and supporting articles, so the site became the authoritative local resource on every major painting topic.

  • Cluster: Residential exterior (weather considerations, paint types, longevity, prep work)

Each cluster carried pillar + supporting articles tightly internally linked. The 430% growth in top-3 ranking keywords came from this. The site started ranking for the right queries across the entire painting landscape, not just one or two.

Suburb-level visibility across Hunter and Lake Macquarie

Painting is a hyper-local services business: buyers care about who's near them, not who has the best website nationally. We made sure Hunter Coast Painting won the local SERP for every priority suburb across their service area.

  • Local citation programme across the right Australian directories (quality presence, not spam quantity)
