The brief

Where Hamilton Janke Lawyers was when we walked in.

Hamilton Janke Lawyers came to Firewire with an unusual problem: they had quality content. Their in-house writing team was producing strong, accurate, well-researched legal copy, but a previous agency's SEO programme had left it stranded. The pages were well-written but rarely ranking; the keyword targeting was diffuse; the site architecture was working against them.

The brief wasn't to write new content from scratch. It was to give the existing in-house team strategic direction. We started with a comprehensive audit, then provided detailed briefs, keyword maps and structural recommendations the writers could execute against. Two years in, the partnership has compounded into category authority across NSW criminal defence queries.

Symptoms when we walked in
Pre-engagement
  • Strong in-house writers producing pages that weren't ranking
  • Previous agency had focused on audits without ever moving the line
  • Website architecture working against crawl efficiency and topical clusters
  • Keyword targeting diffuse and intent-mismatched
  • No content cluster structure around the firm's specialist practice areas
  • On-page SEO basics missing despite the content quality
The approach

Three moves that turned in-house writing into category authority.

  1. 01

Restructured the site for crawlability and clusters

    Architecture before authority.

We rebuilt the website's information architecture to mirror the firm's specialist practice areas, creating clear content cluster structures with pillar pages and supporting articles. Internal linking was overhauled so authority flowed where the firm wanted to rank, not where the old navigation happened to send it.

  2. 02

Briefed the in-house writers against intent maps

    Their writing, our strategy.

Rather than replace the in-house team, we briefed them. Detailed content outlines with target keywords, semantic variations, intent stage, and structural recommendations meant every new piece they shipped was strategically aligned. The result was a content engine that scaled at their pace, with our targeting.

  3. 03

Built topical authority cluster by cluster

    Specialist firm, specialist rankings.

We mapped the firm's three strongest practice areas and built deep content clusters around each: pillar page plus supporting articles, all interlinked, all targeting the buyer-journey queries that actually convert in legal. Within twelve months, the firm was ranking top-3 for the queries that matter in NSW criminal defence.

Inside the work

How the partnership actually worked.

Two years of strategic content direction layered onto Hamilton Janke's in-house writing capacity, across three areas of work.

Site architecture
Restructured the site for clusters, not categories

The previous structure was organised the way the firm thought about itself, by practice area lists. We restructured it the way buyers search, by clusters of intent around the firm's specialist topics.

  • Information architecture rebuilt around pillar pages for each major practice area
  • Internal linking restructured into hub-and-spoke flows from pillar → supporting articles
  • URL hierarchy cleaned up to reinforce the new topical clusters
  • Schema markup (LegalService, Person, FAQPage) added to support rich results in legal SERPs

The architecture work alone didn't move rankings, but it created the foundation everything else compounded against. Without it, the strong content the in-house team was producing kept being absorbed by structural noise.

Editorial direction
Briefed the in-house team, didn't replace them

Hamilton Janke's writers had legal expertise and editorial standards that no agency content team could match. Our job was to direct that capacity, not duplicate it.

  • Detailed content briefs with target query, intent stage, semantic variations and word-count guidance
  • Editorial calendar mapped to the cluster build-out, every new piece reinforcing a specific cluster
  • On-page SEO uplift specs for existing pages: meta, internal links, schema added without rewrites
  • Quarterly content reviews to identify high-performing pages worth expanding into deeper clusters

This is the model that's worked. The writers ship their best content. We make sure it lands in the right cluster, against the right query, with the right structural support. Compounding authority happens when both halves work together.

Cluster build-out
Two years of compounding topical authority

From the restructure launch in April 2023 onwards, every new piece of content reinforced one of three core clusters. By late 2024, the firm was the top-ranked specialist for most of the queries that matter in NSW criminal defence.

  • Cluster 1: criminal charges (the highest-volume practice area, deepest cluster)
  • Cluster 2: court process and procedure (educational mid-funnel content)
  • Cluster 3: location + service intent (the bottom-of-funnel queries that convert)
  • Monthly briefs published, monthly performance reviewed, monthly cluster adjustments

By November 2024, monthly organic sessions hit 9,601, up from a pre-restructure baseline averaging ~1,500/mo. The 50% lead growth is the right number to look at honestly; we're attracting the right traffic, not just more of it. Top-3 keyword rankings up 690% means the queries we're winning are the ones that matter.
